I had a 1.6TDi 2011 Golf - goregous all rounder car. I used it to commute to work and back. I don't think the Scirocco will cost you an insane amount - these 2.0 TDi engines are solid. I'd say bite the bullet and swap cars. You're going from what is a city car to an actual hatchback.
The 2.0 TDI initially was a PD engine but they had electronic injectors which allowed for better control of injection timing, and hence don’t deliver all their torque in a narrow power band.
